I feel like I did when I started writing my book–free-falling into this medium. I know it’s been around for a while, but I could just never find the time. But the house is built and we are moved and I am now, according to a long-time resident of the area, officially a Redlegger. I am also very uneasily unemployed. Looking for a job for the first time since I don’t know when. I’ve been a full-time freelancer since the early ’90s and it let me do a lot I couldn’t have done otherwise. But I’m very tired of unpredictable work schedules and paychecks. I’m not even looking for some great career boost–that I’ll get in other ways. Is it my age that I don’t get interviews? That’s something I can’t control (but at least I won’t be blowing off work after a late night out, which I sorely regret!). I know my freelance history puts people off–it’s been insinuated in some interviews that we freelancers can’t adjust to office life (yes, I understand I’ll have to stop working naked). I’ve also been given the impression that freelancers are seen as slackers (as I remind myself while running to FedEx at the last minute because a client needed something done very quickly). So I’ll keep looking. It’s out there somewhere. I just need to find it.
