Our friends from Germany came to spend a few nights with us. Regular readers of this blog, they knew all about our companion ursi (I’m guessing that’s the plural of ursus!). Anyway, we were all leaving on Saturday morning, rushing around to pack the cars, etc., when Joe came in the house and said, “Bear coming down the driveway!” As I’ve said, it’s blackberry season, so he was following the good eating.
This was not Swimmer Bear, I’m sure (too big), but possibly the same guy who whacked our one birdfeeder months ago. He walked down the path on the side of the house and into the woods directly behind us. Then he caught a whiff of where the birdfeeders usually are. He followed his nose and came right up to the house.
We and our friends watched out the windows, transfixed. (Ol’ 85 Pounds of Love was already at the kennel since we were leaving, so he missed all the excitement.) The bear was greatly disappointed to find no feeders so he headed back on down the mountain and we returned to our packing.
No evidence he returned while we were gone, but the hummingbirds are grateful we’re back!

The bear really was in no haste to leave. Probably knew that it was time to hang up these bird feeders. Poor thing, not THAT day …
